Lower Santa Monica Canyon (LoSaMoCa) has never had a neighborhood association, and historically residents have instead found neighborhood representation in nearby groups. Following the Palisades Fire, a revamp of the Santa Monica Canyon Civic Association, and the creation of the Canyon Alliance, Lower Santa Monica Canyon residents have come together to form their own neighborhood association.

After the devastating Palisades fire, which just barely spared the Canyon from destruction, the Santa Monica Canyon Civic Association (SMCCA) sprung into action. Led by Doug Suisman, the organization mobilized to create maps of the Canyon, which will help residents communicate to first responders in our next emergency.

Canyon Charter Elementary School, which is located at the heart of LoSaMoCa, begun construction in 2024 and aims to complete construction by January of 2027. LAUSD undertook this project, which has a $57.5 million budget, to expand the capacity of the school and remove the temporary bungalows where many classrooms are located.
