Return to the Canyon Event is a Resounding Success

After the devastating Palisades fire, which just barely spared the Canyon from destruction, the Santa Monica Canyon Civic Association (SMCCA) sprung into action. Led by Doug Suisman, the organization mobilized to create maps of the Canyon, which will help residents communicate to first responders in our next emergency. The SMCCA and newly formed Canyon Alliance hosted an event at the Canyon Square on Saturday, March 1st to celebrate the return of many residents to the Canyon after their two-month-long evacuation. At the event, residents toured through an exhibition of the maps of the Canyon, which are available for public viewing from 9:00-3:00 everyday until until March 14th. There was a massive outpouring of community support at the March 1st event, which drew several hundred Canyon residents. Suisman’s message was clear: we must prepare for our next disaster, whether it be an earthquake, mudslide, rainstorm, or fire, and although we live in five different neighborhoods in two different canyons, we are all part of one community.
